10 Years Conference on Passive Houses -
a good reason to celebrate

In 1996 the first Conference on Passive Houses took place in Darmstadt. It was held within the "Working Group on Cost Efficient Passive Houses" - already with a lot of public interest and international participation. The concept was crystal clear at that time - even though
it may have sounded somewhat "utopic" to some participants.

Yet since 1991 the very first Passive House at Darmstadt Kranichstein is occupied. This building has a stable heat consumption of arround 10 kWh/(m²y) - occupied by four families. Until today all the passive components of the house did not need any repair; until today the passive house technology is working the way it was designed for. Until today the building, all for row houses, stayed perfectly air tight.

1996 .... 2006

10 Years of ambitious programme -
that will be celebrated at the Passive House Conference in Hanover!
With birthday surprise Friday-morning at the 10th Conference on Passive Houses, Hanover HCC, 2006-05-19.

Passive House Darmstadt Kranichstein / Year of Construction 1991

 We want to thank all persons, who helped to make this research and building project successful. Especially we thank the supporters and the members of the Working Group on Cost Efficient Passive Houses, the architects of Passive Houses of the new generations, the developers and manufacturers of products suitable for Passive Houses and all those, who constantly and indefatigable worked on the development and the distribution of the concept.

The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge.
There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard.
Their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.
In the heavens he has pitched a tent for the sun,
which is like a bridegroom coming forth from his pavilion,
like a champion rejoicing to run his course.
It rises at one end of the heavens and makes its circuit to the other;
nothing is hidden from its heat.
The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.

(Psalm 19, Line 2-7)

Thy dawning is beautiful in the horizon of the sky,
O living Aton, Beginning of life!
When thou risest in the Eastern horizon,
Thou fillest every land with thy beauty.
Thou art beautiful, great, glittering, high above every land,
Thy rays, they encompass the lands, even all that thou hast made.
Thou art Re, and thou carriest them all away captive;
Thou bindest them by thy love.
Though thou art far away, thy rays are upon earth; Though thou art on high, thy footprints are the day. When thou settest in the western horizon of the sky, The earth is in darkness like the dead.

(Akhenaten, Hymn to the Sun, 1350 b. C.
