Renovation using Passive House Technology

The Passive House concept was initially designed for new buildings. With new buildings, the design can be optimally aligned with high energy efficiency (see e.g. Schnieders et.al.: Re-inventing air heating: Convenient and comfortable within the frame of the Passive House Concept, in “Energy and Buildings”, Volume 37, Issue11, November 2005)

Still, it turned out that decisive elements for achieving higher energy efficiency can also be installed in already existing buildings. That is why Passive House technology is of quite some interest to the refurbishment of old buildings as well.

First experiences with projects in Germany and Hungary have already been presented at the 8th and 9th Conference on Passive Houses.

Working group no. 13 deals with planned and realised projects where Passive House suitable and highly energy-efficient elements have been used in the existing uilding stock.

It is of importance that submitted abstracts deal with substantially improved energy efficiency. Such improvements should amount to a total of more than 50 % compared to average energy demands. .

Additionally applied thermal insulation according to Passive House standard in practice in an old building in Nürnberg/Germany (Architect: Dr. Burkhard Schulze Darup).

If you are going to apply thermal insulation, you might as well do it properly. That is also true for already existing buildings. Because once the job is done properly, the facade will not be modernised again so soon. Additionally applied insulation in compliance with the Passive House Standard offers the economical optimum under current and upcoming conditions (see "The End of Cheap Energy"). And that means some 200 mm of insulation.

Working group No. 13 will deal with "Renovation using Passive House Technology"

Working group No. 13 is part of the international sessions. Only papers in english are accepted for this working group.
