Exchanging Experiences – Refurbishment of Old Buildings by means of Passive House Elements

Even within already existing buildings, the advantages of the Passive House Concept can be enjoyed. Increasing the energy-efficiency of old buildings is different to building new energy-efficient houses. When refurbishing, the existing basic structure of a building is of utmost significance. Model projects, which have been presented at former conferences on Passive Houses, show that it is possible to achieve energy savings between 75% to 90 % by means of Passive House elements.

Since then, additional model projects have been initiated. In the field of highly energy-efficient modernisation, experiences in planning and implementing do exist, as well as further supplementary data of modernised buildings in use. It is of vital importance to exchange and share experiences.
Therefore, at the Conference on Passive Houses in May 2006 there are two working groups:

Working group No. I "Refurbishment of Old Buildings by means of Passive House Elements."
This working group will focus on refurbishment projects that have already been implemented and questions of practical implementation (changes in the energy balance, taken measures).

Working group No. X "Experiences – Passive House Elements used for Refurbishment."
Analysed experiences during refurbishment and occupation of outstanding examples will be presented.
