EXCURSIONS, Sunday 30th May 2010

On Sunday 30/05/2010 participants of the 14th International Passive House Conference in Dresden 2010 are invited to visit passive houses (finished or under construction) in Dresden and the city's surroundings. Six different tours will present more than 30 houses, which are pilot projects within the “Innovations- und Praxisverbund Passivhäuser”, an organisation that supports and funds passive house projects in Saxony since 2002.

TOUR 1 "Dresden East" | 9.00 am - 4.00 pm

school building | apartment building | single family home | kindergarten
The first tour will take you to passive houses in the Saxon capital. The first station will be the nearly finished newly built primary school Dresden Loschwitz. Afterwards we will head for a lately finished modern style apartment and office building in Dresden's district of Briesnitz. After a lunch break participants will walk to a modern and lavish one-family dwelling in solid construction, located in Dresden Albertstadt. This tour will finish with a visit to the kindergarten in Heidenau, the very same building that will be presented to the Panel Group I on Friday. This new building from 2008 impresses with its clever and harmonic integration in the natural surroundings.

TOUR 2 "South of Saxony" | 8.30 am - 5.00 pm

kindergarten | refurbishment apartment building | refurbishment kindergarten | office building
This journey through the south of Saxony begins with a stop at a wooden passive house kindergarten in Oelsnitz. Up to 130 children are looked after in these bright and welcoming facilities. Subsequently the tour visits a refurbished typical Saxon apartment house from the 19th century. The energy demand of this building has been cut by 90% due to the use of passive house components. After lunch we will stop at a colourful kindergarten in Chemnitz. This building was especially suitable for a modernisation of the heat insulation, because it was erected as a system building construction typical for the GDR-era.

TOUR 3 "East of Saxony" | 8.30 am - 4.00 pm

commercial building | refurbishment apartment building (under construction) | kindergarten | gym
The tour into the east of the Free State of Saxony starts with a stopover in Bautzen. Here the second commercial building to be built in Germany fulfilling passive house standards can be seen. Special efforts had to be made to comply with guidelines of monument protection and to consider the increasing numbers of heat sources within offices. After that, we will visit a listed apartment house under refurbishment. The tour will return to Dresden for lunch. In the afternoon a kindergarten in Dresden's district of Klotzsche and the gymnasium of the sports club SG Weixdorf (presented to Panel Group I) are part of the excursion programme. The gymnasium in Weixdorf is the first one to be built according to passive house standards in Saxony. It impresses with a smart energy concept and a high ratio of natural light.

TOUR 4 "Middle of Saxony" | 8.30 am - 5.00 pm

office and laboratory building (under construction) | kindergarten | single family home | refurbishment panel flat and kindergartenhome | kindergarten
The first project on this tour is the newly constructed office and laboratory building of the Saxon Staats hochbauverwaltung (Saxon State Department for Construction Engineering) in Nossen, which will also be presented to the Panel Group VI. A kindergarten in Döbeln will be visited subsequently. This building is of special interest: It is linked with a 19th century church and it demonstrates that it is possible to have a large north facing glass façade within a passive house. After the lunch break we will stop at a one-family dwelling . This house is equipped with a photovoltaic power plant that produces surplus electricity. There is also a constructed wetland for wastewater treatment. The excursion 4 will be completed by the visitation of the renovation of a typical GDR apartment building made from prefabricated concrete slabs in Leipzig (presented to Panel Group VI). The building has been transformed to a modern building for public service offices, with the extension of a kindergarten. The integration of the special requirements of renovating an apartment building made from prefabricated concrete slabs into a non-apartment building and at the same time meeting the administration guidelines for public buildings was the special task dealing with this object. Afterwards participants can conclude the tour at the Main Station in Leipzig or come back to Dresden.

TOUR 5 "Public Buildings" | 8:30 am - 4.00 pm

kindergarten | school building | office and laboratory building (under construction) | archive building
Excursion number 5 starts with a guided tour through the kindergarten in Heidenau, which will be presented in the first lecture of Panel Group I on Friday. The next destination of the tour will be the nearly finished construction of the 62th Primary School in Dresden. After lunch participants can have a closer look at a new office and laboratory building of the Saxon Staatshochbauverwaltung (State Department for Construction Engineering) in Nossen, which will also be presented on Friday to the Panel Group VI. This building provides an interesting example on how to deal with higher air exchange rates and high energy needs due to the lab equipment . The final destination of this tour is the new construction of the Public Record Office Dresden – the first building measure of the Saxon government in passive house style. This object is also part of the presentations in Panel Group VI.

TOUR 6 "Short Trip" | 9.00 am - 3:00 pm

archive building | apartment building | kindergarten (under construction) | gym
The short trip presents some passive houses in Dresden. It starts of with the Public Record Office Dresden (Panel Group VI). This new building had to meet up with the highest requirements concerning the protection of the records against fire, water, light and unauthorized access. Following that participants of this tour will have a look at a recently finished apartment house located in the central and very popular district of Dresden Neustadt. The façade of this apartment house takes up and adopts the historic style of the surrounding buildings from the Gründerzeit-era. Within the same district a construction site of a kindergarten can be visited (also presented to Panel Group I). It was built on an empty building lot in a street of houses and it is structured in two major parts that are connected by a glazed foyer. The last stop on this tour is the new built sports hall in Dresden Weixdorf. This gym with its smart energy concept will be also presented to Panel Group I.
